I don’t typically like tours, walking around as a huddled mass, gawking at the “locals.” But the tour to Palenque de San Basilio with TuCultura was something quite different. Merly started with a great overview on the bus of the history that led to the founding of Palenque. So by the time we arrived and were greeted by our guide Gabino, we already had some very necessary context. We had the honor of spending time with Maestro Rafael Cassiani Cassiani and visit key places within the community.

Everything was done with the utmost respect and our guide Gabino, was wonderful. Great energy and very knowledgeable. We ended the day with a performance by youth from the community and lunch. I left feeling like I’d learned a lot about a place with an incredible past. As an Afro-descendant I personally felt moved by Palenque’s inspirational history of resistance and am so happy that I got to experience this place with TuCultura.
